Stage: 7 to 9 months

The age of great exploration

Between 7 and 9 months, your baby leaves their status as a contemplative infant to become a true little explorer. It is a period of intense physical and cognitive metamorphosis.

Baby starting to crawl

A turning point toward autonomy

The year 2026 marks a new approach to parenting, more centered on biological rhythm and emotional support. At this stage, your child begins to understand that they are a separate person from you.

This realization, while wonderful, comes with new challenges: separation anxiety, the transition to pieces in their diet, and mastering the sitting position.

Motor development

Every piece of progress is a victory toward independence.

The conquest of movement

Around 7 or 8 months, most babies master rolling from back-to-tummy and vice versa with disconcerting ease. But the real revolution is the arrival of crawling. Some crawl on all fours, others do the "bear crawl" or scoot on their bottoms. Regardless of the style, the important thing is the curiosity that pushes them forward.

Floor play

The pincer grasp

This is the time when your baby starts using their thumb and index finger to pick up small objects. This is the very essence of fine motor skills.

Sitting without support

The back is strengthening. Baby frees up their hands to manipulate toys while remaining seated. This stability transforms their vision of the world and makes meals easier.

Pulling themselves up

Around 9 months, some daredevils try to pull themselves up using the bars of the playpen or the sofa. This is the prelude to the first steps.

The adventure of flavors and textures

Food diversification started around 4-6 months takes on a new dimension. Your baby is no longer satisfied with smooth purees. It's time to introduce more complex textures.

  • Small pieces: If baby is sitting well, offer very soft vegetables or well-ripened fruits.
  • Autonomy: Let them touch, crush, and bring food to their mouth. This is a crucial stage of sensory awakening.
  • Proteins: We slightly increase the quantities of meat, fish, or eggs (about 10g per day).

Sleep and the "8-month regression"

Many parents notice unusual nighttime awakenings around 8 months. Don't worry, it's often a sign of a major cognitive leap.

Your baby is working on their new motor skills even while sleeping! Moreover, the understanding of object permanence creates apprehension at bedtime: they know you are leaving, but aren't yet sure that you will return.

"Establishing a calm and repetitive bedtime ritual is the key to making your child feel secure."

Language takes hold

Babbling becomes more intentional. The sounds "ma-ma", "pa-pa", "da-da" appear. Although they are not always addressed to the right person, they testify to the beginnings of verbal communication.

At this age, baby understands simple words ("no", "goodbye", "give") and responds to their name by turning their head. Encourage them by describing everything you do together.

Separation anxiety

This is the so-called "eighth-month" stage. Baby cries when you leave the room or when a stranger approaches too quickly. Paradoxically, this is excellent news!

It proves that the attachment bond is solid. They realize you are unique and indispensable. Play "peek-a-boo" to help them understand that even when invisible, you still exist.

Activities to stimulate their awakening

🧸

The sensory bin

Fill a box with objects of varied textures (soft fabric, wooden spoon, clean sponge). Let them explore freely under supervision.

📖

Touch-and-feel books

Interest in images is growing. Books with textures to scratch or flaps to lift are their favorites right now.

🎶

Action nursery rhymes

Songs like "The Wheels on the Bus" or "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" help them coordinate their gestures with sounds and anticipate actions.

Securing their perimeter

Since baby is moving around, it's time to see your home through their eyes. Get down to their level to spot potential hazards.

  • Table corner protectors
  • Mandatory outlet covers
  • Stair gates
  • Cabinet locks (cleaning products)

Parents' Questions

My baby is not crawling yet at 9 months, is this normal?

Yes, absolutely. Crawling is not a mandatory stage. Some children go directly from sitting to standing. Every child follows their own path of motor development.

When should I worry about language?

At 9 months, we mainly ensure that baby reacts to noises, to their name, and that they make varied sounds. If they seem too quiet or don't react to your voice, mention it during one of the health checks.

How many naps at this age?

Generally two naps: one in the morning (about 1h-1h30) and one in the afternoon (1h30-2h). The late afternoon nap often disappears around 8 or 9 months.

Live every moment with confidence.

The months go by quickly. Soon, your explorer will be preparing to celebrate their first year. Continue to accompany them with gentleness and kindness.
